AMORELLO ANNOUNCES RECYCLED MATERIAL STUDY MassHighway Commissioner Matthew J. Amorello announced today a $120,000 study of the use of recycled materials in highway construction will be conducted in conjunction with a roadway reconstruction project in Tewksbury. The study, jointly funded by MassHighway and the Federal Highway Administration is part of MassHighway’s continuing efforts to incorporate recycled products in its road and bridge improvement program. The Town of Tewksbury, as part of its reconstruction of Livingston Street, will use more than 250,000 shredded recycled tires as fill beneath the roadway surface. This unique use of recycled products is the first of its kind in the state. The study, conducted by Stephens Associates Consulting Engineers of Tewksbury, will examine the effects of the use of recycled tires to prevent roadway settlement. Recycling is a major component of MassHighway’s $700 million a year road and bridge improvement program. MassHighway has incorporated recycled material and products into its construction activities and contracts throughout the Commonwealth. In 2000, almost $27 million were spent on recycled construction materials and products used in MassHighway construction projects. ### |
